Not long to go now until our super-amazing peer-mentor led residential weekend at Avon Tyrrell in the New Forest…and the excitement is starting to build. We’ll be finalising our plans and workshops for the weekend and making sure you have all the information you need should you find yourself lucky enough to have bagged a place…

Also – Michael from JIGSAW will be paying us a visit to provide some information about homelessness and housing options for gay and bisexual young men in London.

Did you know Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the UK and is on the increase? Women aged 16-24 and men aged 20-34 are at the greatest risk. OutZone has teamed up with Brook London to offer all group members free, confidential Chlamydia screening from the comfort of your favourite youth group. Come along tonight to get yourself tested! Find out more about Brook here.

OutZone Photo Board – Another little bit of OutZone history in the making…

A cool suggestion from Andre, one of OutZone’s lovely peer mentors, to create an OutZone Photo-board with images from OutZone events and happenings - a useful tool for our Peer Mentors to use when helping new members settle in and find out more about us…  You can either bring some of your fav pics and/or we can take some new ones!  Disposable cameras and inspiration provided!

Friday 26th/27th/28th March

APRIL 2010

Friday 9th April
New Members Night
April - June 2010 Programme Preview & Session Planning

It’s April! As usual, the first Friday of every month is always New Members Night. Get OUT and about in April with OutZone. You know you want to…

We'll be previewing the next three months at OutZone and asking for your ideas and thoughts on what you think should be going on during weekly group sessions. Come along and/or email your ideas to: info@outzone.org.

Friday 16th April
Self Defense and 'Breakaway Techniques'

The reported 48% rise in gun crime, and almost 27% rise in homophobic attacks on London’s streets during 2009 means it’s even more important that we learn what we can do now to help keep ourselves as safe as possible. Our very own Theresa (the 'original' Girl Diva) will be at OutZone tonight to show us some cool self-defense and breakaway techniques that might help - should you ever find yourself in need of them. Another fantastic OutZone session, not to be missed!

Friday 23rd April
Election Fever!

With a General Election just around the corner (OutZone predicts it'll be on Thursday 6th May) and politicians of all persuasions (good and bad) promising us just how much better they are going to make things (so long as we mark a cross next to their name on election day), OutZone will be digging a little deeper and taking a look at the choices laid before us - in order to decide which way we’re going to swing… as it were.

Will there be a ‘Brown Bounce’ or can ‘Cameron and Co.’ pull it off? Does the sound of 'Prime Minister Clegg', float your boat? Just how hung can a parliament be? Is a swing-o-meter a good or bad thing? How stupid must one be to vote BNP? Ahem...

Whatever you think about politicians and politics, it's vital that you cast your vote on polling day. Check out the links to the three main political parties below:

Friday 30th April
Soho Remembers - 11th Anniversary of the London Nail Bomb Attacks

In a change to the previously advertised programme, OutZone will be attending an event in central London tonight organised by the Soho Remembers 17-24-30 campaign to mark the 11th anniversary of Soho nail-bombings. Find out more about homophobia and hate crime here, or by joining the Soho Remembers 17-24-30 Facebook group. Show your support for this worthy campaign.

Info from the Soho Remembers 17-24-30 campaign:
  • Back in 1999 over a period of three weeks the nail bomber David Copeland planted three nail bombs, targeting three different communities. The first bomb was planted in Brixton on the 17th April 1999 targeting the Black community, the second bomb targeted the Asian community in Brick Lane on the 24th April 1999 and the third bomb killed three people when it exploded on the 30th April 1999 in the Admiral Duncan pub targeting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community of Soho. The bomber was caught before he was able to plant his next bomb targeting the Jewish community in Golders Green. What David Copeland wanted to do was strike fear into these communities and provoke a backlash which would result in the election of the BNP. Luckily his plan failed.

Further details will be announced shortly.
